TrafficAuth-Mobile

TrafficAuth-Mobile brings secure V2X participation to Android and iOS devices, enabling drivers, pedestrians, work-zone workers, fleet operators, transit vehicles, and emergency responders to exchange trusted safety messages through the National Mobility Interchange.

TrafficAuth-Mobile

Secure V2X Capabilities on Android and iOS

TrafficAuth-Mobile is a native mobile application for Android and iOS that enables smartphones to participate in secure V2X communication.

The app connects mobile users to the broader TrafficAuth ecosystem, including the National Mobility Interchange, TrafficAuth-SCMS, and TrafficAuth-Portal. It allows users to receive trusted roadway safety information, broadcast their own safety presence, and access advanced features when authorized by an agency, fleet operator, or account manager.

TrafficAuth-Mobile was built as a native application on each platform to optimize performance, improve responsiveness, and take full advantage of the security, location, notification, and hardware features available on modern mobile devices.

Built for End-to-End Security

IEEE 1609.2 Certificates and Digital Signatures

TrafficAuth-Mobile includes specialized security code that supports IEEE 1609.2 certificates and digital signatures for V2X message security.

This allows the app to sign messages it sends and validate messages it receives, supporting end-to-end trust between mobile devices, roadside infrastructure, vehicles, and network services.

The app automatically acquires and manages the SCMS certificates needed for secure operation. These certificates allow the TrafficAuth ecosystem to confirm that messages came from a trusted participant and that the message content was not altered in transit.

This is especially important for safety-related applications. A pedestrian safety message, work-zone worker alert, signal priority request, or emergency preemption request must be more than a simple data packet. It must be verifiable.

Native Mobile Security

Protecting Credentials on the Device

TrafficAuth-Mobile takes advantage of the hardware security features built into modern Android and iOS devices.

These platform-level protections help safeguard secret keys from software-based attacks and reduce the risk that credentials could be copied, altered, or misused.

By combining mobile platform security with IEEE 1609.2 message security and SCMS-managed certificates, TrafficAuth-Mobile provides a secure foundation for mobile V2X participation.

Precision Location Support

Accurate Positioning for Safety Applications

TrafficAuth-Mobile supports precision location features available in modern mobile devices and supported by major network carriers.

Accurate location is essential for many V2X safety use cases. A worker near an active lane, a pedestrian approaching a crosswalk, or a fleet vehicle requesting signal priority all depend on location data that is timely and reliable.

TrafficAuth-Mobile uses available device and network capabilities to support safety applications that depend on position, movement, and proximity.

Free App Capabilities

Basic V2X Awareness for Mobile Users

The free version of TrafficAuth-Mobile provides entry-level V2X safety functionality for users participating through the National Mobility Interchange.

By default, the app supports visibility of approaching vehicles that are sending Basic Safety Messages, or BSMs. These messages may be sent directly over the network or relayed from 5.9 GHz Direct V2X infrastructure through a connected intersection.

The free version also supports generation and transmission of Pedestrian Safety Messages, or PSMs, over NMI.

This allows a mobile user to participate in V2X safety services without needing dedicated vehicle hardware.

Pedestrian Safety Messages

Making Vulnerable Road Users Visible to V2X Systems

TrafficAuth-Mobile can generate and send Pedestrian Safety Messages through the National Mobility Interchange.

PSMs allow pedestrians and other vulnerable road users to be represented in the V2X ecosystem, helping applications and connected infrastructure understand that a person may be present near the roadway.

Depending on the deployment, PSMs can support use cases such as:

  • Pedestrian awareness near intersections
  • Vulnerable road user alerts
  • Work-zone worker presence
  • Crosswalk safety
  • Connected vehicle warnings
  • Smart intersection applications

For privacy and safety, advanced deployments can apply policies that limit when and how PSMs are generated, such as enabling worker-specific messages only within an active work zone.

Advanced Authorized Features

Special Capabilities for Approved Users

TrafficAuth-Mobile includes advanced modes that are available only to authorized users.

These capabilities are controlled through the TrafficAuth ecosystem and are tied to permissions encoded in the SCMS certificates issued to each device. This ensures that users cannot simply enable advanced capabilities in software without receiving the proper authorization.

Advanced authorized modes may include:

  • Work-zone worker safety mode
  • Signal priority request
  • Emergency signal preemption request
  • Approved fleet vehicle participation
  • Transit vehicle priority support
  • Special operational modes for DOTs or public agencies

Work-Zone Worker Mode

Trusted Presence for Roadway Workers

Authorized workers can be granted permission to send special PSMs indicating that they are active work-zone workers.

This allows TrafficAuth-Mobile to support work-zone safety applications where worker presence, location, and movement may be used to improve situational awareness.

For example, a worker in an active work zone may use TrafficAuth-Mobile to participate in a safety environment that includes connected cones, roadside sensors, TrafficAuth-enabled infrastructure, and NMI message routing.

The TrafficAuth work-zone concept includes mobile worker participation, signed PSM messages, worker presence awareness, and routing through TrafficAuth services for connected safety use cases.

Signal Preemption for Emergency Vehicles

Secure Requests for Critical Response

Emergency vehicle operators can be granted permission to request signal preemption where supported by the DOT or roadway operator.

Preemption is a safety-critical capability and requires strong access control. TrafficAuth-Mobile supports this model by relying on SCMS-issued credentials that encode the permissions assigned to the device and user.

This allows DOTs and public safety agencies to define which users are authorized for emergency preemption and under what conditions those permissions apply.

Permission Management through TrafficAuth-Portal

Fine-Grained Control for Account Managers

TrafficAuth-Mobile permissions are managed through TrafficAuth-Portal.

Authorized account managers can view users, manage permissions, and control which advanced features are available to each device or user.

This allows agencies and fleet operators to manage access at a fine-grained level. For example, a manager may authorize one group of users for work-zone worker mode, another group for transit signal priority, and a smaller set of emergency responders for preemption.

Because permission properties are encoded in SCMS certificates, the app cannot upgrade itself to a higher privilege level. Advanced permissions must be granted through the proper credentialing process.

How It Works

Secure Mobile V2X in Five Steps

1. The User Installs TrafficAuth-Mobile

The app is installed on an Android or iOS device.

2. The App Acquires SCMS Certificates

TrafficAuth-Mobile automatically obtains and manages the SCMS certificates required for secure V2X message signing and validation.

3. The App Connects to NMI

TrafficAuth-Mobile exchanges V2X messages through the National Mobility Interchange.

4. The App Sends and Receives Trusted Messages

The app can receive messages such as approaching vehicle BSMs and can send PSMs or other authorized messages based on user permissions.

5. Advanced Features Are Enabled by Authorization

Account managers use TrafficAuth-Portal to assign advanced permissions. Those permissions are encoded in certificates so only properly authorized devices can access restricted V2X functions.
